Skerrit Goes to Haiti to Help
Following the terrible earthquake in Haiti, Primi Minister Roosevelt Skerrit was on his way there to assess the needs. A number of leading figures were accompanying him on this mission together. These included Barbados Prime Minister David Thompson, Jamaica Prime Minister Bruce Golding, and CARICOM Secretary General Edwin Carrington.
Prime Minister Skerrit was very busy there for a few days with his colleagues. CARICOM is trying to mobilize quick assistance in tandem with the Caribbean Disaster Emergency Management Agency (CDEMA). Haitis is a recent member to both organizations, having joined CARICOM most recently, and CDEMA in September of 2009.
Prime Minister Skerrit Statement about Earthquake
Following the devastating earthquake in Haiti, Prime Minister Roosevelt Skerrit of Dominica issued a statement explaining that he plans to be at the forefront of the assistance efforts. As the CARICOM Chairman, he said, “With this crisis still unfolding, we in CARICOM stand ready to assist our brothers and sisters in Haiti in this their hour of need.”
Prime Minister Roosevelt Skerrit explained that the regional grouping would be better able to target their assistance in the days and weeks ahead, as the true picture of the destruction and need became more apparent. He went on to say that, as the Prime Minister of Dominica, and as part of CARICOM, that his thoughts and prayers were with the people of Haiti.
