Development in Dominica
In recent years, after winning re-election in the 2005 General Elections, Roosevelt Skerrit assumed responsibility for the portfolios of minister of Finance, Planning, National Security and Overseas Nationals. In these capacities Skerrit was able to forge diplomatic relations with Cuba and Venezuela, receiving aid packages to help improve the island’s economy.
Due to the efforts of Roosevelt Skerrit, Dominica will play an important role in the innovative Petrocaribe initiative in which Venezuela will store its crude oil on Dominica prior to distribution to neighboring islands. Hugo Chavez, President of Venezuela, paid a state visit to Dominica on February 16th, 2007 in order to dedicate a crude oil storage tank as part of the Petrocaribe initiative.
