Roosevelt Skerrit Info

Before attaining the office of Prime Minister Roosevelt Skerrit was a member of parliament and held the portfolio of minister of Education, Sports and Youth Affairs. In his capacity as Education Minister Roosevelt Skerrit founded the Dominica State College. Skerrit also led a mission to the Embassy of the People’s Republic of China in Barbados, a nearby Caribbean Island, as a first step towards establishing diplomatic relations between the two countries, which did not exist at the time.

Within a few months of becoming the Prime Minister in January 2004 Roosevelt Skerrit established diplomatic relations with the People’s Republic of China. Included in the establishment of relations between the two nations China bequeathed upon Dominica a generous aid package.

Roosevelt Skerrit has also been able to forge relations with leaders Fidel Castro of Cuba and Hugo Chavez of Venezuela, increasing the visibility and stature of the Commonwealth of Dominica.
